真定府藁城人，字邦彦，号熊峰。成化二十三年与兄石玠同举进士。与修《大明会典》。累擢为礼部尚书兼学士掌詹事府事。授检讨。嘉靖三年以吏部尚书兼文渊阁大学士，直内阁。守己鲠狷，持论坚确，进退凛然。辞归时襆被一车而已，都人叹其廉洁。所作诗淹雅清峭，讽谕婉约，有词人之风。有《熊峰集》、《恒阳集》。
